Out in the middle of the desert of the Johnson Valley OHV area, on the south side of Cougar Buttes, there is a secret that many don't know of. On the side of a large rock is a detailed skull that fits the environment perfectly. If you are in the area and have a little free time, this side attraction is worth the short trip to see.
The dirt road going to the skull is easy for any off road vehicle. The skull itself is on the backside of a rock up the wash and against the hill, making it hard to find.
The trail to the Skull is a connector to other trails continuing east, but is typically run as an out and back trail.
The sand wash toward the end of the trail and the optional hills near the skull are the hardest part of this trail, but still easy.
Turn east from Camp Rock Road, onto Wilshire Road.
Dispersed camping is allowed throughout this area...
