Home-Made 4x4 Rig

Built to wheel

The Beast! This 1971 Scout II has been 'slightly' modified. What remains of the original scout is little more than the body and (some of) the chassis.

This 4x4 rig runs with 5.38 gears and has a custom stretched wheelbase sitting on a Dana 60 axle in the front and a 14 bolt, full float axle in the rear. The rear differential is locked up by a Detroit Locker. The front includes a Lock Right differential locker.

Granny 4Lo-Lo is achieved with a 203/205 doubler tcase and an SM465 4 speed transmission held in place by a custom / fabricated transmission cross-member.

Wider, longer front leaf springs on reverse shackles, home-made spring mounts and 63 inch rear leaf springs keep this Scout chassis and body suspended high enough to clear the 42 inch pit bull tires on steel bead-lock wheels ( recently upgraded from 38" tires).

Shock mounts are custom all around, with a dual shock set-up in the rear.

The power plant under the hood is a Chevy small block 350 with Holley pro-jection, and supported by custom, fabricated motor mounts.

A high steer steering setup is controlled by a drilled and tapped steering box with PSC hydro assist.

The latest upgrade to this monster is a WFO anti axle wrap bar in the rear.

Additional custom, home-made add ons are:

  • Frame attached rock sliders

  • Custom bumpers with spare tire carrier, Jerry can mount and winch mount.

  • Custom gauge cluster

Trail communications in this rig are kept simple with a dual-band, handheld BaoFeng UV-5R ham radio and Battery Eliminator.
